Could you cope when you suddenly go blind midway through your life?
This was the circumstance that Pablo Amascual III had to deal with, but it has not stopped him from rendering public service to the best of his abilities.
It started in 2006 and he was 45 years old. Because of a condition called diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes, his vision slowly went hazy then eventually disintegrated into black nothingness. He was declared “legally blind” by the Asian Eye Institute in 2007 and needed a personal aid to go through life’s daily motions.
Unfortunate, yes, but the impairment has not hindered him from attending work in the Leyte Normal University, where he has worked for almost his entire professional career. A Chief Administrative Officer and a historian by profession, he continued to add to his long list of contributions to national history.
